Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually excelled in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category, which is one of our highest scores. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection grades. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively minor. While this place had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we gave this facility a rock-bottom F in the category of long-term care. Facilities that do not score well in long-term care often do not provide as much nursing care and also may be struggling in some of the areas of routine personal care we assessed. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. As it turns out, this facility gave the vaccine to just 51.89394 percent of its residents, which is somewhat concerning. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this place fared poorly with 3.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this statistic is nearly twice the national average.
Short-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, we gave this facility an F for its short-term care grade. In the category of short-term care, we endeavor to qualify indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. With its grade in this area, we were not stunned to learn that this nursing home is well below average in terms of its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its residents based on the metrics we assessed. Frankly, this was what we expected to find. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients that eventually returned home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 33.2 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The final area we scored was nursing, in which this facility was given a bottom of the barrel score in this category also. We gave it an abysmal F in this area, which is definitely a major concern. Nursing scores are based in large part on quality and quantity of nursing care. This place provided just 2.3 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This figure is well below average. Unfortunately, this facility also had abysmal scores in some of the quality-based measures to go along with its weak nursing hours. For starters, we looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers. This facility was at more than twice the national average in this metric.
