Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

In addition to being a first rate facility overall, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it earned an A+. Few nursing homes performed this well in this area. Inspection grades are tied to many pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this area tend to have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

On the list of its many elite scores, this facility received a top-shelf long-term care score. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- in this category. When facilities receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 96.00666 percent of its residents, which is better than most nursing homes. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.09 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility had fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

The next area we graded is short-term care. This facility received an impressive short-term care score, with a grade of B+ in this category. Our short-term care scores are likely most meaningful for people needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation typically mandates additional highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not only nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It supplied more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the typical facility. The final measure we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from the facility. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in New York in this area with 56.5 percent of its residents returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

The next category we assessed is nursing, where this facility was awarded a B. Although this proved to be its lowest category grade, this is still a good grade. The nursing rating is based on a host of factors. The most important one is the amount of time nurses spend with residents. This nursing home provides 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these statistics as good indicators of the quality of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
