Nurse Quality
On top of being a first rate nursing home overall, this nursing home also excelled in the area of nursing, where it received an A+. Few nursing homes fared better in this category. Our nursing rating looks at the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We look at both the levels of licensure of those nurses as well as the number of hours spent with patients. This particular nursing home provided 4.8 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This was one of the more impressive figures we found. Furthermore, we found that a significant portion of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. In addition to providing impressive levels of care, this place was also above average in several of the major quality-based metrics we assessed in this category. It performed well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Short-term Care Quality
We also wanted to point out the fact that this nursing home was superb in our short-term care rating. We awarded them an elite score of A+ in this area. In computing our short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This area is typically a fair assessment of the nursing home's rehabilitation. This nursing home elevated its grade in this category by offering more care from registered nurses to its residents than the average facility. The last metric we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Arizona in this area with 63.9 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
Adding to an already impressive profile, this facility also received virtually flawless health inspections in recent years. As a result, we awarded it an A+ inspection grade. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Facilities with higher grades in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This place was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered severe. This indicates that CMS did not deem any of these deficiencies an immediate threat to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
In the final area we analyzed, this facility received first-rate marks in the category of long-term care as well. Consequently, it was given an A+. This left it as one of just a few of facilities we awarded A+'s in each of our categories. Nursing homes that receive this kind of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure patients are kept in good health. On top of looking at the well above average level of care provided by nurses and other staff at this facility, we also were impressed by the nursing home's vaccination data. By way of example, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 98.75 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. This combination proved to be successful as this nursing home was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had just 1.27 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a significantly lower hospitalization rate than the majority of nursing homes.
