Facility Inspections
In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this facility performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A+. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating our inspection grades. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively minor. This nursing home was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate risk to patient safety or health. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this nursing home's impressive category scores came in the area of long-term care. We awarded them one of our higher scores in that area, with a score of B+. Nursing homes that receive this kind of score in this category tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure residents are well cared for. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.6 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than many nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a strong nursing score. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B in this area. When computing our nursing ratings, we assess both staffing levels and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home provided 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident each day, which was above average. Finally, this facility was also above average in each of the major quality measures we looked at in this category. It performed well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we assessed is short-term care. We awarded this nursing home a grade of D in short-term care, making this the nursing home's weakest category grade. In the area of short-term care, we try to evaluate measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We assess the facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. It looks like this facility was below average in multiple staffing areas we assessed. In fact, it offered fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. The last metric we looked at in this area is the number of residents that were able to return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 21.7 percent of its patients returning home.
