Facility Inspections
The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an elite inspection score. Its inspection grade was far superior to its overall score. In the inspections category, we gave it an A+. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
The second highest area we gave this nursing home in any area came in the category of long-term care, where we awarded it a B-. In calculating our long-term care grades, we size up the assistance with daily living received by a facility's patients. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 93.30025 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is a bit less than we expected but still a respectable percentage. Lastly, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. This nursing home did not excel here either, with 2.82 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Although this figure is somewhat concerning, this statistic can be skewed for some facilities due to the preexisting medical conditions of patients.
Short-term Care Quality
The third category we analyzed was short-term care, where this facility received a C in this category. In determining our short-term care grades, we assess a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This category is frequently a useful assessment of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 43.5 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.
Nurse Quality
The next category we assessed is nursing. For that category, we awarded this facility a C. Our nursing score weighs a handful of components, but the most important consideration is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home averages 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
