Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it fared well in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B+ for that category, which is one of our better scores. These inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
We were also stunned to discover that this facility received a decent long-term care rating in our assessment. We gave it a C in that area. In computing our long-term care ratings, we analyze the personal care received by a nursing home's patients. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 84.03615 percent of its patients. This is several points less than average. On a more positive note, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
The next category we assessed was short-term care. This facility's was given a poor short-term care score where it received a lowly F. Our short-term care scores are meaningful for patients needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally requires higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes a wide range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The last metric we considered in this area is the number of residents who who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 5 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
The last area we scored is nursing. We gave it an F for this area, which is a very poor score. Nursing ratings are heavily correlated with quality and quantity of nursing care. This place provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is an alarmingly low total. Unfortunately, this nursing home also had abysmal marks in some of the quality-based metrics to go along with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and we were disappointed. This facility was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this metric. This is a bad sign when you consider that so many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic helped pull down this nursing home's nursing rating quite a bit.
