Long-term Care Quality
We gave this facility a grade of A- for our long-term care score. This is more impressive than its overall grade. Facilities that do well in long-term care tend to provide residents with better supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 99.44367 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping residents out of the hospital. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. With 1.74 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility is just about middle of the pack in this area.
Facility Inspections
Inspections is another area where this facility excelled. In fact, we gave this facility an A- for our inspections category. This score is far more impressive than the facility's overall grade. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Facilities with higher scores in this category most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a middle of the pack grade in the category of short-term care, where we gave it a B-. Short-term care scores are based in part on a facility's quantity of highly-skilled highly skilled professionals. This means a wide spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, in addition to other forms of therapy. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. The last metric we considered in this category is the number of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that it performed much better in this metric with 56.8 percent of its patients returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
The next category we assessed is nursing. We gave this facility a grade of D in nursing, leaving this as the facility's least impressive grade. When calculating a nursing home's nursing grade, we assess the quantity of hours nurses are with patients as well as the skill levels of those nurses. This nursing home averaged a meager 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident daily. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this facility also didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This nursing home had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics pulled down this facility's nursing grade significantly.
