The primary reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it earned an excellent inspection grade. In fact, its inspection score was far superior to its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave it an A. Our inspection ratings weigh several factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with better grades in this category generally have few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Based on this, we still had a generally favorable view of this nursing home's recent inspections.

This facility also received a positive long-term care grade. As a matter of fact, we gave them a B in that area, which happens to be one of our more favorable scores. For prospective residents seeking a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility gave the vaccine to 60.1735 percent of its residents. This is somewhat lower than we were hoping for. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we hoped for, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

This facility's next most favorable category is short-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of C. With our short-term care score, we try to create a fair barometer for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we assess a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. We found that this facility was below average in the two key staffing areas we focus on. The facility provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 5.5 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.

Turning to our next category, this nursing home really did not fare well. Due to an abysmal grade of F in nursing, this was this nursing home's weakest category grade. Our nursing score is mostly tied to the nursing home's nurse staffing. With only 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily, this facility's nurse staffing levels were far below the national average. On top of receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this facility was less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and found that this facility was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this statistic.
