One of the reasons this proved to be a quality facility is that it received a very impressive short-term care score. In fact, short-term care is its best category. In that category, we gave this facility an A. Our short-term care grade is typically employed to measure a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To provide good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must offer better levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. We found that 5.6 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.

One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing grade. In fact, nursing turned out to be its second best category grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A. Nursing grades are primarily based on a facility's nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as employing a system of turning residents more frequently.

Turning to another of this nursing home's strengths, it also received a very impressive inspection rating. Inspections proved to be one of its best grades. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of B+. Inspection grades are tied to several pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that excel in this category typically have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This facility received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies an immediate risk to patient safety or health. Remember that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.

The final area we graded was long-term care, which ended up being a weak link for this nursing home. We gave this facility a D for long-term care, rendering this the nursing home's worst category grade. We'd nevertheless recommend that you consider all of a facility's category grades.
