Facility Inspections
This facility received a strong overall grade as described above, but we especially wanted to emphasize its excellent inspections in recent years. We awarded it an A in this area. Our inspection scores weigh several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this category generally have few of these severe deficiencies. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our nursing grade. There are a host of factors included in this category. Most of the criteria are tied to nurse staffing. This place provides an incredible 4.1 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Very few nursing homes provide this quantity of nursing care to their patients. Out of that total, many of the hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this facility also performed well in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. In terms of the number of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility is also strong in the category of long-term care, where it was given a score of B+. It performed better than most nursing homes in this area. Facilities that excel in this category typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. In addition to providing very impressive levels of nurse staffing, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This percentage is also far better than the vast majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.51 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we assessed was short-term care. This facility received a strong short-term care score in our assessment, with a grade of B. This nursing home really does not have any weak links. In determining these short-term care scores, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The objective is to create a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. One reason for this facility's strong score in this category is that it provides more care with registered nurses to its residents than the average nursing home. The final measure we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. It was respectable in this area with 46.4 percent of its residents returning home.
