Facility Inspections

Grade: A

This facility earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to point out its nearly flawless government inspections in recent years. We gave them an A in this category. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Additionally, we also would like to note that this facility received favorable long-term care marks in this assessment. We gave them one of our higher grades in this area, with a B. This turned out to be the nursing home's second strongest score. When facilities receive this type of score in this category it is a good sign for patient care and indicates that the facility is well-staffed with nurses aids. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is far higher than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of C, which is a decent grade. Our nursing rating looks at the facility's nurse staffing levels. We factor in both the levels of licensure of the nurses and the amount of time spent with patients. This particular nursing home provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This figure is significantly below the national average. Finally, despite not having the most impressive total nursing hours per resident, this place performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is generally a good indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

The next category we assessed is short-term care, is this facility's weakest category. We awarded this nursing home a D in this area. This is one of the few weak links in an otherwise impressive profile. Short-term care grades are based in part on a facility's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a wide spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. It looks like this place was subpar in the two key staffing areas we assessed. In fact, it supplied fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most other facilities. The last statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 4.7 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these poor metrics was damning for this facility's short-term care score.
