Registered Staff Hours
Even though we did not have many favorable things to say about this facility's overall score, it did receive a respectable nursing grade of B-. Nursing ratings are based largely on levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility fared better in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. In fact, it performed well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's short-term care grade appears to be one of its more favorable scores. The facility was awarded a B- in this category. Short-term care grades are based in part on a nursing home's quantity of skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This includes a broad range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this place provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other facilities. The more important thing is determining what bearing this had on quality of care. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, closer to half of their patients are able to return home so this figure is below average.
Does this page answer your questions about Samaritas Senior Living Grand Rapids Lodge?
Continuing to surprise us with some of its category grades, this nursing home received a decent grade in the area of inspections as well. We gave it a B- for that category. This is yet another strong score for a nursing home that is really quite weak overall. We would argue that one of the most important factors in assessing an inspection report is deficiencies. We especially focus on the severity of the deficiencies. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
Switching gears to our next area, this facility really did not fare very well here either. With an abysmal grade of F in long-term care, this is about as terrible as it gets. When nursing homes receive this kind of score in long-term care it is a bad sign for resident care and it may mean that the facility is not as well-staffed with nurses and aids. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 68.64111 percent of its patients. This is quite a bit less than what we were hoping for. Surprisingly, this nursing home was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than the average nursing home. This is its best feature in this category.
