Facility Inspections
While this place's overall grade was terrible, it actually performed pretty well in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B+ for that area, which is one of our better scores. Inspection grades account for several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid nursing homes with a bunch of severe deficiencies flagged. While this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
We awarded this facility a grade of just D for our short-term care grade and that actually turned out to be its second most favorable category. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to score a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to provide higher levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Considering its abysmal score in this category, we were not shocked to discover that this facility offered far fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that just 0 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
Long-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this facility received an F for its long-term care grade. For residents looking for a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. After considering the volume of nursing care, we then looked at the facility's vaccination records. We were pleased to find that this nursing home vaccinates 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility has fewer hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
Nurse Quality
The last category we looked at is nursing. This nursing home was given an abysmal grade of F in this category. Our nursing rating analyzes the facility's level of nurse staffing. We weigh both the levels of skill of those nurses as well as the number of hours spent with residents. This place averaged only 3 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is an alarmingly low total. Unfortunately, this facility also had abysmal marks in some of the quality-based measures to pair with its weak nursing hours. For starters, we looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers. This nursing home was at more than double the national average in this metric.
