Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home surprisingly fared well in long-term care. We gave it a B for that category. When nursing homes receive this type of grade in this category it is usually a good sign for patient care and indicates that the facility is well-staffed with nurses aids. After looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is more than the majority of nursing homes. This nursing home was also able to keep its patients out of the hospital. While it had 2 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was better than most nursing homes due to it having some more complex patients.
Facility Inspections
This facility performed well in the area of inspections also. In fact, we awarded it a B for this category, which is a respectable grade. This is remarkable for a nursing home with such a weak overall score. Arguably the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. It is typically in your best interest to avoid nursing homes that had too many deficiencies. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

Nurse Quality
Unfortunately, we gave this facility an F for its nursing grade. There are a host of factors within this category. Many of these datapoints are tied to the quantity of nurse staffing. This nursing home averages 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below the national average. In addition to ranking below average in nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also had poor scores in the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility was at about 1.5 times the national average in both of these statistics. This is a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These scores pulled down this facility's nursing rating significantly.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to our next category, this facility did not perform well in this category either. With a very poor grade of F in short-term care, this is about as as uninspiring as it gets. With our short-term care category, we endeavor to forge a sound measure for rehabilitation. In this process, we analyze a nursing home's offerings of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Lastly, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely wasn't a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 38.7 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. At most facilities, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
