Long-term Care Quality
Although we gave this place an abysmal overall score, we gave it a B- for our long-term care rating. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. The last statistic we assessed was its hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 4.62 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this figure is somewhat concerning, this statistic may be skewed for some facilities based on the medical complexity of residents.
Nurse Quality
Remarkably, we awarded this nursing home a grade of C for our nursing rating, which isn't a bad grade. Nursing scores are tied to nurse staffing levels. This place provides 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is better than average. In calculating our nursing grades, we apply additional weight to hours performed by more highly trained nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these metrics as reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Facility Inspections
We also wanted to draw your attention to this place's inspection score where it received a lowly F. This usually means we found some red flags on its inspections. We would advise paying close attention to any deficiencies on a facility's inspection reports when it receives this poor of an inspection rating. We would pay close attention to the level of severity of those deficiencies. This particular nursing home had 9 deficiencies by government inspectors. The only favorable thing we found is that none of the deficiencies were in the categories that indicate that they created a risk to resident safety or health. Finally, CMS flagged this nursing home for possible abuse or neglect. This is not what you want to see. We advise you to direct your search elsewhere.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we assessed was short-term care, in which this nursing home was given a poor score here also. We gave it an F for this category, which is definitely very concerning. Our short-term care ratings are considered to be most meaningful for individuals needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means not just nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Considering its abysmal score in this category, we weren't surprised to learn that this nursing home provides significantly fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The final measure we looked at in this category is the number of patients who eventually returned home from the facility. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 13.2 percent of its residents returning home.
