Facility Inspections
Although we did not rate this place favorably overall, we want to point out its relatively solid government inspections in recent years. We gave it a B+ in this area, which was much better than its overall score. Perhaps the most significant factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. It is generally best to avoid facilities that have a long list of deficiencies. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a strong score in long-term care. This facility received a grade of B in this area, which turns out to be one of our higher scores. When facilities receive this kind of grade in long-term care it is a good sign for resident care and indicates that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses aids. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 99.57806 percent of its patients, which is better than the majority of nursing homes. The last datapoint we assessed is the nursing home's hospitalization rate. We found that this facility had 2.27 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, this facility received an F for its short-term care score. Short-term care grades are often employed to grade a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation To offer highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to offer better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other licensed professionals. Given its score in this category, we weren't surprised to discover that this place is well below average in terms of the quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its patients based on the measures we assessed. Finally, we considered the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that just 36.6 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
Nurse Quality
The final area we looked at is nursing. This facility was given a bottom of the barrel grade of F in that area. Nursing grades are based in large part on quantity of nursing care available. We do not think quantity of care was the reason for this facility's poor nursing rating. With 4.2 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis, this nursing home actually surpassed the national average. Despite being above average in terms of nursing hours, this place had abysmal scores in the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. For starters, we looked at the percent of residents sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility was at more than double the national average in both of these metrics.
