In addition to faring well in its overall grade, this nursing home received high marks in the category of short-term care as well. It received our highest score in that category with a score of A+. Our short-term care grades are probably more meaningful for individuals in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. This means not merely nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Arizona in this area with 69.4 percent of its patients returning home.

This nursing home also earned an A+ inspection score, making it one of the rare facilities to receive multiple A+'s in our category grades. This is based on the facility's recent government inspections. An A+ in this area is one of the highest complements we can pay to a facility. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection scores. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some are relatively minor. This place was hit with 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be severe. This indicates that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to resident health or safety. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.

We also awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for its nursing grade. Our nursing rating includes quite a few factors, many of which are tied to nursing hours. This facility provided 4.4 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which is among the higher totals in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We were very impressed by both of these figures. In addition to offering high levels of care, this place was also above average in several of the major quality measures we assessed in this category. It performed well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.

The final category we assessed turned out to be this nursing home's worst category. Nevertheless, even in its weakest link we still awarded it a respectable grade of B- for long-term care. Long-term care grades are based on a facility's volume of nursing care. This includes a broad scope of personal care services, ranging from help with activities of daily living to routine medical services. In addition to providing high levels of nursing care, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
