Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this turned out to be a strong nursing home is that it received a very impressive inspection rating. Inspections turned out to be its best category grade. In this area, we gave this facility an A+. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home performed well in the category of long-term care. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that area, which turns out to be one of our most dominant grades. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. One of the factors we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccines. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. This is a great way to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for the nursing home population. The last statistic we looked at is its hospitalization rate. Here we found that this place had 2.52 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category grade came in the area of nursing. In that category, we gave this nursing home a grade of C. This wasn't quite on par with some of its other category grades mentioned above. In determining a nursing home's nursing score, we consider the quantity of hours nurses commit to patients and the skill levels of those nurses. Based on the CMS data, this nursing home offers 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based metrics, such as preventing major falls. This facility performed admirably in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically an indicator that a nursing home has quality controls in place. Some falls can be prevented if a facility provides enough nurses aids to assist its residents.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we graded was short-term care. Sadly, it received a lowly F for this category, which is a bottom of the barrel score. You should not simply disqualify a nursing home as a result of one terrible grade though. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to measure a facility's rehabilitation services. To offer good rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to provide higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. It appears that this facility was subpar in two of the key staffing areas we assessed. It supplied fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The last datapoint we considered in this category is the percentage of patients that eventually returned home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 35.5 percent of its residents returning home. This was quite a bit below the national average.
