Facility Inspections
To go along with its decent overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. This grade is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this category tend to have very few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's better category grades came in the area of long-term care. In that area, we gave this nursing home a B. For residents looking for a permanent place to live as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care is a very important category. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 93.03278 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is a bit below what we expected but still a decent figure. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 3.19 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as strong as most of its other scores in this category, this figure can be skewed for some facilities due to some of the preexisting medical conditions of patients.
Nurse Quality
We also awarded this facility a favorable grade in nursing. This facility earned a grade of B in this category, which is one of our better grades. Our nursing score assesses several datapoints, many of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed better than average in this area. This is often a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we graded is short-term care, which turned out to be this nursing home's weakest category. We awarded this nursing home a D in this category. Unfortunately, this score hurt the facility's overall grade to some degree. Our short-term care ratings are likely more important for folks needing rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation typically requires more highly-skilled nursing services. This includes not just nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The final datapoint we considered in this area is the percentage of patients that were able to return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 25.6 percent of its patients returning home. This was well below the national average.
