Facility Inspections
In addition to earning a great overall rating, this nursing home fared even better in our inspections category which is associated with the nursing home's recent government inspections. We awarded it an A+ for this category, which is one of our highest grades. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a score of A for our long-term care score. When facilities receive this kind of grade in this category it is typically a good sign for patient care and indicates that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. After assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. The last statistic we looked at was the facility's hospitalization rate. Here we found that this place had 2.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we analyzed was short-term care, where this facility received a C in this category. In calculating our short-term care grades, we scrutinize the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This category is frequently a fair assessment of a facility's rehabilitation. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of physical therapy per week to its residents. The last statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 42.6 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.
Nurse Quality
This facility's least impressive category is nursing, which is the final category we assessed. In this category, we gave this nursing home a grade of D. In determining a facility's nursing rating, we weigh the amount of time nurses are with residents as well as the levels of training of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below average. Although this facility did not excel in the area of nursing hours, it surprised us in a few of the quality-based metrics in the nursing category, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home was above average in this metric, which is one redeeming quality we found in this area.
