Short-term Care Quality
On top of performing well in its overall grade, this facility received high marks for short-term care as well. As a result, it received our highest grade in that category with a score of A+. Our short-term care ratings are believed to be more critical for those requiring rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation generally requires additional skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not only nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other types of therapy. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is generally an excellent sign. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes with 70.8 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, this facility was given superb marks in the category of long-term care. As a result, it was given one of our best scores in that area with a score of A+. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. After assessing the significant amount of nursing care provided by this nursing home, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is much higher than the average nursing home. This combination proved to be successful as this place keeps its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received an A+ nursing grade, making it one of the few nursing homes to receive multiple A+ category grades. The nursing grade weighs quite a few factors, most of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This facility provides an incredible 5 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Out of that total, many of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly highly trained levels of nurses. On top of providing impressive levels of care, this place also excelled in several of the quality measures we looked at. With under 5 percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home Kansas in this category. This is generally a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Many pressure ulcers could be prevented by providing better nursing care and having a protocol of moving residents at least once a day.
Facility Inspections
Adding to its impressive category grades, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it earned an impressive grade of A. This rounded out a straight A report card for this place. Inspection ratings account for a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this category usually have very few severe deficiencies. While this place had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
