Facility Inspections
In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. Our inspection scores account for several factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this area usually have few severe deficiencies. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
To add to its first-rate assessments in other areas, we awarded this facility a grade of A for its long-term care score. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in long-term care it typically means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. After considering the very impressive nursing hours provided by this nursing home, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is significantly higher than the majority of nursing homes. This combination proved to be effective as this facility was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.26 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a substantially lower hospitalization rate than the majority of nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home received an impressive short-term care score as well. We awarded it one of our better scores in that area with a score of B. Short-term care ratings are meaningful for residents looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a wide spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The final item we considered in this area is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the nursing home. This was more of a strength for this nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Mississippi with 58.5 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term patients return home.
Nurse Quality
The next category we graded is nursing. This nursing home was given a strong nursing rating this year, with a B-. Even though this isn't as elite as a few of its other category grades, this is nevertheless a decent score in that category. There are a host of criteria included in this grade. Many of these data points reflect the quantity of nurse staffing. This place provided 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is an impressive figure. Lastly, we also assessed a few nursing quality measures and this place excelled in some of these. With less than five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Mississippi in this category. This is generally a good measure of quality nursing care.
