Facility Inspections
Although this facility's overall grade was not a highlight, it actually received a very good score in the area of inspections. We gave it a B+ for that category, which is one of our better grades. Arguably the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. It is generally best to avoid nursing homes that had too many severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This means the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
We also want to point out that this facility received a decent grade in our nursing category. We awarded it a grade of C in the area. Nursing ratings are based in large part on levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided just 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics. While this facility got dinged a bit for its nursing hours per resident, it excelled in a few of these quality measures. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed well in this area. This can be an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as employing a protocol of turning patients more frequently.
Long-term Care Quality
As it turns out, this nursing home only received a grade of D for its long-term care grade, which is well below average in this category. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 98.701294 percent of its patients. To our surprise, this facility also fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 1.52 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, some of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we rated is short-term care, is this facility's weakest area. We gave this facility a grade of D in that category. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to grade a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to offer highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to offer better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. Based on its weak score in this category, we were not surprised to find this nursing home offered far fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. The last statistic we considered in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 29 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar statistics sunk this facility's short-term care score.
