Facility Inspections
The main reason this nursing home received a decent overall score is its impeccable health inspections in recent years. We awarded them one of our higher grades in that area, with an A-. This is a much better grade than the facility's overall grade, which was decent but not in the elite range. These inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This facility was hit with 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe. This means that the inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to the area of long-term care, we gave this nursing home a grade of A- in that category. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it typically means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia tragically can be a dangerous ailment for nursing home patients so we like it when a facility doesn't leave this to chance. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 2.46 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we analyzed is short-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a solid grade of C. In determining our short-term care ratings, we scrutinize a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This score is considered to be a reliable measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The final statistic we considered in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. This proved to be a stronger area than its staffing data. This place fared well in this area with 59.1 percent of its residents returning home. This was a big boost to its grade in this area.
Nurse Quality
The final area we analyzed was nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F for this category, which is a bottom of the barrel score. This is certainly a significant concern. We weighed the licensure of nurses at the facility, in addition to the quantity of time those nurses worked with patients, in determining our grade in this category. With just 2.4 hours of nursing care per resident each day, this place's nurse staffing levels were well below the national average. On top of receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this facility was less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and found that this place was at roughly 1.5 times the national average in this statistic.
