Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home really excelled in the area of short-term care, where it earned an A-. Few facilities fared better in this category. If it wasn't for this category, this nursing home's overall grade would have been much worse. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This category is considered to be a fair measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The last metric we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who returned home from the facility. It performed better than most facilities in this area with 55.9 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, less than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
Inspections is another category where this nursing home excelled. We gave this facility an B+ for our inspections rating. This is far more impressive than its overall grade. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities with higher scores in this area typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This place was assessed 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies to create an immediate risk to patient safety or health. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.
Nurse Quality
In addition, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B in our nursing category. This is one of our better grades. There are numerous subcategories included in this grade. Many of these criteria relate to nurse staffing. This facility provided 3.6 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Roughly a quarter of these hours were provided by registered nurses, which are among the most skilled levels of nurses. This is a high percentage of skilled nursing care. We weight these hours more in determining our nursing scores. Lastly, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This nursing home fared well in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. For example, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this facility performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided with better nursing care.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's worst area is long-term care, which is the final category we scored. In this area, we gave this facility a grade of just D. For residents in need of a permanent place to live as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 95.97316 percent of its residents. Unfortunately, its hospitalization rate was far less impressive. Here we found that this facility had 2.6 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a concerning rate.
