Although we didn't rate this nursing home favorably overall, we actually gave it an excellent grade in the category of inspections, where it received an A-. These inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This tells you CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.

This nursing home also was awarded a favorable long-term care score. Indeed, we gave them a B in that category, which happens to be one of our better. Nursing homes that excel in this category tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. On top of considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is very impressive. Pneumonia is too frequently a deadly ailment for nursing home patients so we prefer when a nursing home does not roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Unfortunately, this nursing home's next highest score was short-term care. As it turns out, with a grade of D in this area, it still performed relatively badly. In calculating our short-term care scores, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to formulate a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Based on its grade in this area, we weren't stunned to discover that this place is well below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its residents based on the metrics we assessed. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 0 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their patients are able to return home so this is well below average.

The final category we looked at was nursing, in which this facility was given a poor score in this area as well. It received an abysmal F in this area, which is definitely very concerning. Nursing ratings are mostly associated with the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. With only 0.2 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, this nursing home's nurse staffing levels were far below average. To go along with its low total nursing hours per resident, this nursing home had bad scores in several of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. For starters, we looked at the percent of residents having falls which led to serious injury. This place was at more than 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is quite alarming in light of the fact that so many falls could be avoided with better nursing care. This ended up sealing the nursing home's fate of receiving a poor nursing grade.
