Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection ratings. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies are quite insignificant. Unfortunately, we weren't able to find deficiency data for this facility. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

We also want to draw your attention to the fact that this facility was awarded a top-shelf grade of A in our long-term care area. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care typically provide patients with better supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. On top of considering the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia tragically can be a life or death ailment for nursing home residents so we prefer when a facility does not roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home also was given a strong short-term care grade. In fact, we gave it an above average score of B+ in this area. In computing our short-term care grades, we size up the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This score is considered to be a reliable assessment of a facility's rehabilitation. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, based on the information this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last measure we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We found that 5.4 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

The last area we looked at was nursing, where this nursing home received a B+. This rounded out an elite report card. Few facilities received a B+ or higher in all four categories. In calculating a facility's nursing rating, we consider the quantity of hours nurses are caring for residents as well as the level of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This facility fared well in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. For example, in terms of the percentage of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided with better nursing care.
