Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

One of the reasons this proved to be a great nursing home is that it earned a very impressive long-term care score. In this category, we awarded this facility an A. When nursing homes receive this type of score in this category it is typically a good sign for patient care and indicates that the place is well-staffed with nurses aids. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is far higher than the average nursing home. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

Turning to inspections, this nursing home excelled in that area, which is based on the facility's recent inspection reports. We awarded it a grade of A for that category. These inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

This facility also excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. When calculating our nursing grades, we factor in both staffing levels and the skill levels of those nurses. This facility provided 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a system of turning residents even once per day.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

In our final area, this facility also was awarded an impressive short-term care score, with an A. This topped off an elite profile. In our short-term care category, we strive to forge a meaningful measure for rehabilitation services. In this process, we assess a nursing home's level of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the data this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last metric we looked at in this area is the number of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the facility. We found that 6 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.
