Facility Inspections
This facility earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its nearly flawless health inspection reports in recent years. We awarded them an A in this category. Inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this place had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple of minor deficiencies shouldn't stop you from considering a nursing home.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home also was awarded an impressive long-term care score. In fact, we awarded them a grade of B in this area, which is one of our more favorable scores. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. This facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had just 1.3 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a significantly better hospitalization rate than the average nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
The third category we assessed was short-term care, where this nursing home was given a grade of C in this category. In calculating these short-term care grades, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our purpose is to formulate a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of residents who who were able to eventually return home from this facility. This place performed better than most facilities in the country with 52.4 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
This facility's weakest category was nursing, which is the last area we analyzed. For this area, we awarded this nursing home a D. We looked at the licensure of nurses employed by the facility, in addition to the quantity of hours those nurses were with patients, in computing our score in this area. This nursing home provides 2.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing grades. This place fared well in terms of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls.
