Short-term Care Quality
In addition to being a first rate nursing home overall, this facility also excelled in the area of short-term care, where it earned an A. In our short-term care category, we strive to forge a sound barometer for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we analyze the nursing home's scope of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Remarkably, this nursing home provides about 50% more services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is a very favorable sign. Finally, we looked at the number of residents that ultimately returned home from this facility. In addition to excelling in the area of physical therapy, we found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in the country with 60.9 percent of its residents returning home.
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing grade. In that category, we gave this nursing home an A. We looked at the qualifications of nurses employed by the facility, as well as the quantity of time those nurses spent with patients, in determining our grade in this area. This nursing home provides an incredible 4.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Out of this total, many of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its residents suffering falls leading to serious injury, this nursing home performed as well as any nursing home the state. Preventing serious falls is generally an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are employed.

Long-term Care Quality
The third area we analyzed was long-term care. Contributing to its elite resume, this facility also performed well in that category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of of A for that category. For prospective residents in need of a permanent place to live as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. In addition to looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 92.04153 percent of its residents, which is a few points less than we expected. Fortunately, this facility excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 1.03 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a significantly lower hospitalization rate than the average nursing home.
Finishing off its excellent profile, this facility also performed well in the area of inspections, which is based on the facility's recent government inspections. In fact, we gave it a B+ for that category, which is one of our higher grades. Inspection ratings account for a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category generally have very few severe deficiencies. This nursing home was assessed 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This indicates that the inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
