Although this nursing home's overall grade was terrible, it actually performed well in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of B for that area, which is one of our better scores. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection grades. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be relatively minor. This nursing home was assessed 9 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that the inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies to cause an immediate threat to patient health or safety. A couple minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.

We also wanted to point out this nursing home's unfortunate short-term care grade where it received an F. Short-term care grades are based in part on a nursing home's quantity of skilled nursing services. This means a vast spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, not to mention other forms of therapy. With a grade this poor in this area, we weren't stunned to find that this nursing home was below average in two of the key staffing areas we focus on. The facility offered far fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most other nursing homes. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 30.5 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.

Unfortunately, we gave this facility an F for its nursing grade. In determining our nursing grades, we weigh both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This facility averaged just 2.9 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This place also had terrible scores in several of the quality-based measures to pair with its weak nursing hours. For starters, we looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers. This facility was at more than twice the national average in this datapoint.

Long-term Care Quality

The next area we looked at was long-term care. Sadly, it received a lowly F for this area, which is a rock bottom grade. Nursing homes that receive this type of grade in this category may not provide the type of consistent 24/7 care that some other facilities offer. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. As it turns out, this facility gave the vaccine to just 53.48101 percent of its residents, which is several points lower than we expected. Surprisingly, this place was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. This was its best score in this category.
