Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ in short-term care. This is as good as it gets in this category. Short-term care grades are often employed to judge a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To have quality rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to feature higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 7.8 percent of this facility's patients returned home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

This nursing home also received an A+ inspection grade, making it one of the rare facilities to receive multiple A+'s in our categories. These inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

Contributing to its first-rate resume, this nursing home also was given a strong long-term care score, with a score of A. For prospective patients looking for a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are very important. One of the factors we considered on top of nurse's aid hours is vaccines. It does not look like this nursing home provided vaccination data. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

In our last category, we gave this facility an A+ for its nursing score. This rounded out a very favorable report card. The nursing score features many data points. The most important factor is the number of hours nurses spent with patients. This nursing home provides 0.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home Kentucky in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a policy of moving patients even once per day.
