Facility Inspections
While this nursing home received a decent overall score, its inspections rating is notably better than its overall grade. Due to a strong inspection report this year, it received one of our better scores in that area with a B+. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This tells you that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies should not stop you from considering a nursing home.
Short-term Care Quality
Additionally, we also would like to note that this nursing home was given favorable short-term care marks this year. We gave them one of our more impressive scores in that area, with a grade of B. This turned out to be the facility's second highest grade. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to assess measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The last measure we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that 44.6 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
Nurse Quality
In addition, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B in our nursing category. This is one of our better grades. When computing our nursing ratings, we assess both nursing hours and the skill levels of those nurses. This facility provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at certain nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these statistics as reliable measures of the quality of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we rated is long-term care, proved to be this facility's worst area. We awarded this nursing home a grade of D in this area. In a long-term care setting, the facility's primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. After considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is higher than the average nursing home. Surprisingly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.57 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility has fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
