Facility Inspections
In addition to receiving an elite overall score, this facility earned an A+ inspection score. This is based on its recent inspection reports. An A+ in this category is one of the best complements we can offer a nursing home. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places with higher scores in this area typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This exemplary facility also was superb in the category of short-term care, where it received a score of A+. Few nursing homes fared better in this category. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This rating is more often than not a reliable assessment of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. The final item we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Alabama in this area with 64 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a very impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A. We scrutinized the licensure of nurses working for the facility, as well as the quantity of time those nurses worked with patients, in computing our rating in this category. This particular facility provided 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This was one of the more impressive totals we found. In addition, we found that a significant portion of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. For example, it performed as well as any nursing home in the country in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We view these metrics as good measures of the quality of nursing care provided.
Long-term Care Quality
In our final category, this nursing home also was awarded a very strong long-term care rating, with a grade of A. This topped off a very impressive profile. Long-term care grades in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. This nursing home's vaccination data were not as strong as its nursing hours. It gave the pneumonia vaccine to just 78.97311 percent of its residents. We would like to see some improvement herein this statistic next year. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we hoped for, at least this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.48 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than the average nursing home.
