Facility Inspections
On top of being an elite facility overall, this facility also performed well in the area of inspections, where it earned an A+. Few nursing homes fared as well in this category. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some are relatively insignificant. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also wanted to direct your attention to the fact that this nursing home was superb in our long-term care category. We awarded them an impressive score of A+ in this area. Nursing homes that do well in long-term care tend to provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. One of the criteria we considered in addition to nursing hours is vaccines. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 99.710144 percent of its residents. This is a reliable method to avoid negative health outcomes for the elderly population. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. With 1.94 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this place is just about middle of the road in this area.
Nurse Quality
This facility is also strong in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of B. It outperformed most nursing homes in this category. Our nursing grade focuses on the facility's level of nurse staffing. We weigh both the levels of training of those nurses and the amount of time spent with residents. This particular nursing home provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as employing a policy of turning patients more often.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we assessed was short-term care. In that area, we gave this facility an acceptable grade of C. This actually proved to be this nursing home's worst area. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we look at the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This rating is frequently a useful measure of a facility's rehabilitation. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This proved to be more of a strength for this facility. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of facilities in the nation in this area with 53.4 percent of its residents returning home. This is a higher rate than most facilities.
