Facility Inspections
In addition to being an elite nursing home overall, this facility excelled in the area of inspections, where it received an A+. Few nursing homes performed this well in this area. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be relatively minor. This facility was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that the government inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies to create an immediate threat to patient safety or health. Keep in mind that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a very impressive nursing grade. In fact, this turned out to be its second best category grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A. Nursing scores are largely tied to a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This place provides an incredible 4.2 hours of nursing care per patient daily. Out of that total, many of the hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the more highly trained levels of nurses. In addition to providing impressive levels of nursing care, this place also fared well in several of the quality measures we assessed. For example, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this place outpaced the national average. This is often a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented with better nursing care and a policy of regularly turning patients to prevent bed sores.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to an additional strength for this facility, we gave them one of our more favorable scores in our short-term care category as well, with a B. Our short-term care grades are probably most important for patients in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation typically requires higher levels of skilled nursing. This includes not just nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who eventually returned home from this facility. We found that 33.4 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we graded is long-term care, where this facility was given a B. This actually proved to be this nursing home's least impressive category. A facility could be doing a lot worse when their poorest score still outperforms most other nursing homes. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to provide residents with closer supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to offering elite levels of nursing care, this facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This figure is also much better than most nursing homes. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.65 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
