Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was as bad as it gets, it actually didn't perform terribly in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a C for that category, which is one of our better scores. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection grades. One key factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some are relatively minor. This place was hit with 3 deficiencies on its government inspection report, but none were in categories G through L. This tells you it dodged the more ominous categories of deficiencies. Unfortunately, we also need to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received significant government fines in recent years.
Short-term Care Quality
We awarded this nursing home a grade of just D for our short-term care score and that actually turned out to be its next best score. In computing our short-term care grades, we size up the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This category is considered to be a meaningful assessment of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. Based on its score in this area, we were not surprised to find that this facility was well below average in terms of the number of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its patients based on the metrics we looked at. Honestly, this was what we expected here. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who eventually returned home from this nursing home. This facility did not fare well here either. We found that just 46.4 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was below average.
Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category was nursing, but even there it received a grade of just D. This is still a well below average grade. When computing our nursing grades, we weigh both staffing levels and the training levels of those nurses. This place provided a meager 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is an alarmingly low total. Finally, we also looked at some quality-based metrics in computing our nursing ratings. This nursing home was above average in two of the major metrics we focus on, with good marks for minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. These metrics are often good indicators of the quality of nursing care available.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we assessed was long-term care, which turned out to be this nursing home's worst category. We awarded this facility a grade of D in this category. For patients seeking a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. After assessing the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination data. We were optimistic to discover that this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Surprisingly, this nursing home also fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had only 1.18 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
