Facility Inspections
We want to draw your attention to the fact that this facility outperformed its overall grade in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our best grades in that category with an A. These inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Based on this, we still had a generally positive view of this nursing home's inspections.
Short-term Care Quality
We also gave this nursing home a decent grade in the area of short-term care, where it received a B-. In the category of short-term care, we attempt to evaluate indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We analyze a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. In this nursing home's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the typical facility. Finally, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This proved to be more of a strength for this facility. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of nursing homes in the country in this area with 50.9 percent of its patients returning home. This is a higher rate than most nursing homes.
Long-term Care Quality
The third best category we awarded this nursing home in any category came in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a grade of C. In crafting our long-term care scores, we analyze the nursing home's ability to maintain its permanent residents' health and quality of life. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. The last statistic we assessed is its hospitalization rate. While it had 2.07 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was not too bad.
Nurse Quality
The final area we assessed is nursing, is this facility's weakest category. We gave this nursing home a D in that area. Our nursing grade is based on several data points. The most important factor is the amount of time nurses spent with residents. This nursing home provides 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is slightly below average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this place also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these metrics pulled down this facility's nursing grade significantly.
