Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home earned a strong overall grade as discussed above, but we especially wanted to emphasize its excellent long-term care score. We awarded them a grade of A in this category. Nursing homes that do well in this category tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to residents. Once we assessed the quantity of nursing care, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia tragically can be a deadly illness for nursing home residents so we like it when a facility doesn't leave this to chance. The last datapoint we looked at was the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this place had 2.5 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received a grade of A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection grades. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these end up being quite insignificant. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home received its third most favorable category score in the area of short-term care. We awarded this nursing home a grade of C in this area, which is a reasonably acceptable score. In calculating our short-term care scores, we assess a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is often a useful assessment of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The last metric we considered in this category is the number of patients who who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that just 43.7 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. Unfortunately, this was below the national average.
Nurse Quality
The next category we assessed was nursing, which proved to be this nursing home's worst area. We awarded this nursing home a grade of D in this area. Of course, this grade hurt the nursing home's overall profile to a certain degree. The nursing score assesses several components, but the paramount one is the quantity of nurse hours spent with patients. This particular nursing home provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below average. Although this facility did not excel in nursing hours, it actually surprised us in a few of the quality-based assessments in the nursing category, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed better than average in this datapoint, which is one redeeming quality we found in this area.
