Although we did not rate this nursing home favorably overall, we want to point out its relatively favorable short-term care score. We awarded it a respectable grade of B in this area. With our short-term care category, we seek to create a fair measure for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we look at the facility's scope of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. The last statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. It fared as well as just about any nursing home in California with 58 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay patients are able to return home.

We also want to point out that this facility received a decent grade in our nursing category. We awarded it a grade of B- in the area. When determining a nursing home's nursing rating, we assess the amount of time nurses are with residents and the skill levels of those nurses. This nursing home provides an impressive 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in some quality-focused statistics. Specifically, we look at the percent of residents who sustained pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these datapoints as predictive indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

The third area we analyzed is long-term care, where this nursing home was given a grade of C in this category. In computing our long-term care scores, we analyze the personal care received by the facility's patients. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is an above average percentage. Lastly, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this place had 5.04 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Although this figure is quite a bit higher than the national average, this statistic can be skewed for some facilities based on the preexisting medical conditions of patients.

In our final category of inspections, this nursing home received a horrible grade. We weight this grade more heavily than other categories. For nursing homes with bad inspection ratings, you should really scrutinize any severe deficiencies found on their recent inspection reports. This facility was assessed 6 deficiencies on its inspection report. The only positive thing we can say is that none of its deficiencies were in the categories that indicate that they caused a threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility also received 25 substantiated complaints in recent years. This is yet another bad sign.
