Short-term Care Quality
One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ short-term care grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this area. In computing our short-term care grades, we scrutinize the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This area is typically a useful measure of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities in the country in this area with 67.8 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. This turned out to be its second best category grade. In that category, we gave this nursing home an A. Our nursing category assesses many subcategories, most of which are tied to nursing hours. This particular facility provided 4 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Approximately one quarter of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. Both of these statistics exceed the national average. Finally, this nursing home was also above average in each of the major quality measures we assessed in this category. It performed well in the area of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
Facility Inspections
Moving on to another of this facility's strengths, it also received a very impressive inspection grade. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B+. Inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we rated is long-term care. This nursing home received a very good long-term care score this year, with a C. Although this is not nearly as elite as many of its other category grades, this is nevertheless an acceptable score in that area. In calculating these long-term care scores, we look at the nursing home's ability to maintain its permanent residents' health and quality of life. After looking at the very respectable amount of nursing care provided by this facility, we next considered the facility's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. This combination proved to be successful as this place keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had only 1.35 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.
