While this nursing home's overall score was not a highlight, it actually really excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A for that area, which is one of our highest scores. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining our inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some can be relatively insignificant. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G through L. This tells you CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.

Sadly, this facility's second most respectable category is long-term care. As it turns out, with a D in this category, it still fared somewhat poorly. For prospective residents in need of a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are very important. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is a very respectable total. Surprisingly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than many nursing homes. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.

This facility ended up receiving a bottom of the barrel score in our short-term care area. It was given an F in this area. In the area of short-term care, we seek to qualify indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We assess the facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. As you might expect, we found that this nursing home offers far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the typical facility. The final metric we considered in this category is the number of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 3.9 percent of its residents returning home. This was well below the national average.

The next area we assessed is nursing, in which this nursing home received an abysmal score here as well. We gave it a lowly F in this area, which is obviously a major disappointment. When calculating a nursing home's nursing score, we look at the amount of time nurses are seeing residents as well as the level of licensure of those nurses. This facility offered a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is an alarmingly low total. To pair with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this place also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing major falls and pressure ulcers. This nursing home had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics pulled down this nursing home's nursing grade quite a bit.
