One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ in short-term care. This is as good as it gets in this category. In calculating our short-term care grades, we look at the facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This area is typically a meaningful measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The last datapoint we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in California in this area with 65.5 percent of its residents returning home.

This nursing home performed well in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category, which is one of our highest scores. There are numerous datapoints within this area. Most of the datapoints reflect levels of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 4.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day, which was among the highest figures we found. Lastly, this nursing home was also above average in each of the major quality measures we assessed in this category. It performed well in the area of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.

This facility also performed well in the area of inspections. It received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our best grades in that category with a grade of A-. Inspection scores account for several factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher grades in this area generally have very few of these severe deficiencies. This facility was hit with 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the government inspectors didn't deem any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent risk to patient safety or health. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

Historical

The final area we analyzed was long-term care, which turned out to be this facility's least impressive category. Sadly, it received an F in this area, which is certainly a bit concerning. For prospective patients seeking a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. Due to its grade in this category, it is surprising to learn that this facility performed relatively well in both nursing hours and its vaccination records. In fact, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This statistic is actually higher than the majority of nursing homes. Surprisingly, this place also fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.87 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
