Short-term Care Quality
In addition to being a quality nursing home overall, this facility really excelled in the area of short-term care, where it received an A+. Our short-term care scores are considered to be most meaningful for those needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually mandates additional skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes not just nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Remarkably, this facility provides about one and a half times as many hours of services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is often an encouraging sign. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in this area with 64 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also performed well in inspections, which is based on its recent government inspections. We awarded it an A for that area, which is one of our top grades. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better grades in this area usually have few of these severe deficiencies. This facility received 8 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This means that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to pose an immediate risk to resident safety or health. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in the industry.
Nurse Quality
In addition, this facility also received favorable nursing grades this year. In fact, we awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B. When calculating our nursing scores, we assess both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the skill levels of those nurses. This facility provided 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient each day. Approximately a quarter of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are among the most highly skilled levels of nurses. Both are impressive figures, which typically corresponds with quality care. Finally, this facility also performed well in several of the quality measures we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its residents suffering falls which lead to major injury, this place performed as well as any nursing home in the state. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we scored was long-term care. Sadly, it received an F for this area, which is a bottom of the barrel grade. We wouldn't necessarily disregard a nursing home due to one concerning category though. Facilities that don't fare well in long-term care typically are not as well-staffed and are lagging in a few of the areas of routine healthcare services we looked at. This nursing home's vaccination statistics weren't as favorable a few of its other data points in this category, such as its nursing hours. This nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to just 66.0287 percent of its patients. We'd like to see some improvement herein this statistic next year. To our surprise, this place actually fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had just 1.1 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. This is its best score in this category.
