Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall grade was decent, it really fared well in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category, which is one of our highest scores. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G through L. This means CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a decent grade in the area of short-term care, where we gave it a B-. With our short-term care score, we try to forge a fair measure for rehabilitation. In doing so, we analyze a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The key is determining what bearing this had on quality of care. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. This proved to be more of a strength for this facility. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of nursing homes in the nation with 52.8 percent of its patients returning home. This is a higher rate than most nursing homes.
Long-term Care Quality
The third best area we awarded this nursing home in any area came in the area of long-term care, where we gave it a grade of C. In the category of long-term care, we weigh the quantity of care provided by a facility, as opposed to more medically-intensive services. One of the criteria we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccinations. Fortunately, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 94.497604 percent of its residents. Lastly, this nursing home was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.99 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Nurse Quality
The next area we assessed was nursing. This nursing home was given a C in this area. Our nursing rating focuses on the facility's nurse staffing levels. We factor in both the levels of skill of the nurses as well as the amount of time spent with residents. This facility provides only 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is a somewhat uninspiring figure as it is well below the national average. Lastly, our nursing scores also consider some quality-focused statistics. We look at the percentage of residents who experienced pressure ulcers and major falls. Sometimes these statistics are decent indicators of the quality of nursing care, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
