Facility Inspections
While we were fairly low on this nursing home overall, we awarded it a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. This score is significantly more impressive than the nursing home's overall score. Inspection scores weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid places with a list of severe deficiencies flagged. While this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's next highest area ended up being short-term care. In that area, we awarded this facility a C. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This grade is frequently a solid measure of a facility's rehabilitation services. Fortunately, this nursing home offers both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities offer both. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients that returned home from this facility. We found that it fared better than most nursing homes in the nation with 49.7 percent of its patients returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
Sadly, this facility received an F for its long-term care grade. For prospective patients seeking a permanent place to live as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care is a very important category. After looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 3.29 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score wasn't bad due to it having more complicated patients.
Nurse Quality
The last area we rated is nursing. This nursing home received a very poor grade of F in this category. There are a host of criteria within this area. Many of the data points are tied to the quantity of nurse staffing. This place provided just 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. Unfortunately, this nursing home also had abysmal scores in some of the quality-based metrics to go along with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percent of patients suffering pressure ulcers and we were very disappointed. This nursing home was at approximately 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is a bad sign when you consider that so many bed sores could be avoided with better nursing care. This statistic helped pull down this facility's nursing score significantly.
