Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Even though we were not complementary of this facility's overall grade, it actually earned an impressive short-term care score this year. We awarded it a B in this area, which proved to be a rare glimmer of hope in its profile. In determining our short-term care grades, we size up a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This grade is frequently a meaningful assessment of a facility's rehabilitation services. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final metric we considered in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that 5.5 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: B-minus

We were also pleasantly surprised to award this nursing home a relatively favorable inspection rating as well. We awarded it a B- in this category, which was much better than its overall grade. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing these inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some can be relatively insignificant. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even with this deficiency, this nursing home still received a relatively favorable inspection report.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

We awarded this facility a respectable grade in the area of nursing as well, with a grade of C. We looked at the qualifications of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the number of hours the nurses were with residents, in determining our score in this area. This facility provided just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality measures. While this facility got dinged a bit for its nursing hours, it actually excelled in a few of these quality-based measures. With less than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed well in this metric. This is typically an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as employing a system of moving patients even once per day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The last area we analyzed is long-term care. This nursing home received a poor grade of F in that area. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it generally means the facility did not perform well in our quality measures relating to patient care. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Candidly, we were a bit alarmed this facility administered the vaccine to a relatively low 80.07968 percent of its patients. To our surprise, this nursing home was actually able to limit hospitalizations. With only 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than the average nursing home. This was its best score in this category.
