Short-term Care Quality
On top of earning a great overall score, this nursing home received an A+ in the category of short-term care. Our short-term care ratings are presumably more critical for individuals needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally mandates more highly-skilled nursing services. This includes not merely nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. The final item we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Virginia in this area with 65.3 percent of its residents returning home. With most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
Adding to this nursing home's list of strengths, it also received an excellent nursing grade. We awarded them an impressive grade of A- in this category. Our nursing grade is mostly based on the nursing home's nurse staffing. This place offers 3.2 hours of nursing care per patient each day, of which more than one hour of those were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the more highly skilled nurses. In computing our nursing ratings, we add more weight to hours provided by registered nurses. Finally, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This place fared well in some of the quality measures we assessed. For example, in terms of the number of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented with better nursing care.
Facility Inspections
Adding to its impressive category grades, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B+ for our inspections rating. Our inspection scores are tied to many datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that excel in this category tend to have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. We should note that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we scored was long-term care, which proved to be this nursing home's least impressive category. We awarded this facility a grade of D in that area. Nevertheless, we wouldn't assess this nursing home based solely on a single weak area, since it was given some high-end scores in other categories. If you are seeking anything other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at each nursing home's long-term care ratings. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 95.89041 percent of its residents, which is better than most nursing homes. Surprisingly, this nursing home also keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0.11 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
