Facility Inspections
While this place's overall score was as bad as it gets, it actually fared well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B for that area, which is one of our better scores. Arguably the most critical factor we consider in calculating our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. It is typically in your best interest to avoid nursing homes that had a long list of severe deficiencies. This nursing home received 12 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This indicates that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies an immediate threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
Included in this facility's several terrible grades was its F in the area of short-term care. Our short-term care ratings are probably more critical for folks in need of a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally mandates additional highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not just nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Given its score in this area, we weren't stunned to discover that this nursing home was well below average in terms of its number of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its patients based on the metrics we assessed. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that just 37.3 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.
Long-term Care Quality
Another unfortunate development is the F this nursing home received in the category of long-term care. If you are looking for anything other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at long-term care scores. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Thankfully, this nursing home administered the vaccine to 99.54338 percent of its patients, which is an above average total. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. While it had 2.14 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was not bad since it had some more complex patients.
Nurse Quality
The final category we rated is nursing, where this facility received a bottom of the barrel score in this area also. Unfortunately, we gave it an F for this category, which is obviously a major disappointment. Nursing scores are based largely on quantity of nursing care available. This particular facility provided a meager 3.1 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This statistic is significantly below average. This place also had terrible marks in some of the quality-based measures to go along with its weak nursing hour totals. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and we were disappointed. This nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this statistic. This is a bad sign in light of the fact that many bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic helped pull down this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
