Facility Inspections
To go along with a favorable overall grade, we gave this facility an A+ for our inspection category. Inspection grades weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this area generally have few severe deficiencies. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A few minor dings are not the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
Contributing to its strong profile, this nursing home also was given a dominant short-term care grade, with a grade of A. Our short-term care ratings are arguably more critical for people in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally utilizes more highly-skilled nursing. This means not only nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. The facility supplied more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than a typical facility. This is typically a very favorable sign. The last statistic we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in California in this area with 61.9 percent of its residents returning home. At most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
This facility also excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. The nursing rating assesses quite a few datapoints, most of which are based on nursing hours. With 4.1 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, this nursing home surpassed the vast majority of facilities. Finally, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. For example, in terms of the percentage of its residents sustaining falls which lead to serious injury, this facility performed as well as any facility in the state. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we graded is this nursing home's weakest category. Nevertheless, even in its worst category we still gave it a decent grade of C in long-term care. For prospective residents looking for a permanent residence rather than skilled nursing, long-term care grades are a key measure. In addition to assessing the very solid volume of care provided by aids and other staff at this nursing home, we also were happy with the nursing home's vaccination statistics. For example, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 94.73684 percent of its residents, which is very respectable. This combination proved to be effective as this place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
